Village Life in America

Including the Period of the American Civil War
as Told in the Diary of a School-Girl

Caroline Richards
1842 - 1913

The journal Caroline Richards started when she was 10, parallels a young girl growing up as the nation did too. Although raised by a Puritan grandmother, she had both humor and the intelligence to think for herself. When Richards heard Susan B. Anthony speak, she signed a pledge to help bring about equal rights for woman. And during the Civil War, she sent a letter of support to General McClellan when he was criticised. From hearing P.T. Barnum and Charles Dickens speak to playing the new game of croquet (not well), Caroline Richards experienced and wrote of the changes and development of a still young country.

To
My dear brothers,
JAMES AND JOHN,
who, by precept and example,
have encouraged me,
and to my beloved sister,
ANNA,
whose faith and affection
have been my chief inspiration,
this little volume
is lovingly inscribed.
